Always Keep Your Resume Up To Date

October 21st, 2008

This is a very important topic as it is vitally important to keep your resume up to date and ready to go at a moment’s notice.  Further resume tips for the writer are to ensure your resume is achievement driven. You should be able to list specific achievements on your resume and be able to discuss them in an interview. This article has been abridged from the CareerNews.

Achievements that employers like to hear are those that are quantifiable; meaning an achievement that you can equate a specific number to, ex: “In my most recent position I created and implemented an internal control process that reduced man hours by 20 a week and saved the company over $30,000.”

NEW YORK, NY — The number of Americans joining the unemployment line has risen to levels we haven’t seen since 2001. Many working professionals are having to rethink their career paths and do some soul-searching about the realities of the job market. With so many displaced workers and uncertainty as to when a turnaround will occur, competition for job openings is getting fierce. Job seekers and even workers who haven’t received pink slips should take a step back and re-evaluate their skills and position themselves to succeed in this tough job market. Here are some tips to set yourself up for success.

Is the resume passe? No. Anyone looking for a job will need a resume. It should be strategically crafted, truthful and spellchecked. Work your network. Wow the people responsible for making the hiring decisions. If you’re not networking you are crazy, because you’re limiting your options and opportunities. Get out of your comfort zone and join industry organizations and introduce yourself to new people.

Manage your brand. Social networking can be a career killer if you are not careful. Remove any inappropriate pictures or postings online that will sink you in the applicant pool. Look beyond borders. If opportunities on the home front aren’t materializing, Americans may want to turn their attention overseas. Some of the fastest growing economies — Russia, China, India, Dubai and countries throughout Asia — are eager to import American talent.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The competition for job openings grows increasingly heated. Here are some resources aimed at helping the unemployed get back on their feet.

  • Career coaches help clients write resumes, put together work portfolios and practice interviewing and networking skills.

  • Free Government-Backed Assistance: With a little patience, you can receive job search assistance for free. Each state receives funding from the federal government for career centers. To find a one-stop career center, visit www.servicelocator.org.

  • Nonprofits: There are some nonprofits that help the unemployed re-enter the workforce. Also, many community colleges and churches offer job workshops, which help people with resumes and networking skills.

PORTLAND, OR — Online job boards are the most often utilized recruiting tool for hiring managers at small and mid-sized organizations, according to a recent study by the Inavero Institute for Service Research, a leading provider of employment related research tools. The study conducted in June 2008, included more than 1,000 hiring experiences throughout the United States in a variety of industries.

More than 50% of those surveyed had implemented online job boards as a part of their recruiting strategy in the past year and allocation of overall recruiting budget was found to be continuing a shift to online job boards. Online job boards are currently the top hiring tool. Recruiters report applying multiple resources as part of their hiring portfolio and average three resources per open position. Online job boards produce the greatest number of applicants with 19 applications per job opening, nearly double traditional media’s average.

The study’s findings suggest that while there are multitudes of hiring tools available, it is critical to choose the appropriate medium based on job description and job type in order to yield the highest quality candidate and save valuable time and resources throughout the hiring process. While traditional media continues to be utilized there is also a clear trend towards online job boards and other nontraditional media in the budget mix of hiring managers.

Hiring Managers Don’t Want Your Text Messages

September 4th, 2008

This article has been abridged from The Career News.  It provides some great advice on what not to do, even with the availability of current technology and social networking.  Remember that when you are seeking a job; it is who of you to be at your utmost professional best - The JobArsenal Staff

NEW YORK, NY — Some job seekers are finding out that the communication strategies they’ve grown up with don’t work in the real world. Communication misfires can result in lost opportunities. That seems to be the case lately between job seekers and hiring managers across the nation. Hiring managers are reporting an increase in casual communications like text messaging, e-mails using text-lingo, messages sent via mobile devices, and even Friend invitations from MySpace or Facebook. While text-messaging lingo might be completely natural to many, for some it’s the only way they do communicate. They fail to notice that those in positions of authority may find such methods of communication disrespectful. Some hiring managers have received thank you notes from job candidates via mobile devices. These messages are filled with text-lingo and smiley face emoticons. To “Generation Text” this is an after-interview courtesy, but the form it takes comes across to an executive hiring manager as insincere, rushed, and a little shallow.

One hiring manager reported that a job candidate sent her a Friend invite from her personal Facebook page. “Friend” is not a level of intimacy you can assume with someone you met only long enough to interview with. These perceptions will someday dissipate. But job-hunting will always require you to put yourself in the light a hiring manager expects to see you in.

Employer Tip of the Day - The Final Interview Question

September 2nd, 2008

This question will help you hire the top talent in your industry… At the end of the interview, when candidates think the interview is over, ask them one final question: “If I met your former boss at a social function, and asked to hear just one sentence about you, what would that sentence be?”

Candidates will not be able to load their answers with fluff, and you should get a pretty accurate picture of the candidates. You can also see how fast they can think on their feet.

Finding a great recruiter, one who will work hard for you and assist in finding the right opportunities for you is very important to ones search.  Do however keep in mind that finding a job remains the sole responsibility of the seeker.  However, adding an excellent recruiter to your network will gladly increase your odds of finding the right opportunity for you - The JobArsenal Staff

You are a motivated, career-oriented professional. You have a strong work ethic and you will work hard to get the job done. So, why are you having such a difficult time finding a job that best suits you? Wouldn’t it be great to find a job where you can get paid and enjoy the work?

Recruiters are in the business of matching the right job candidate for the right job. They are constantly on the lookout for people with the skills and personality that fit the companies they help recruit for.

Here’s how it works. Recruiters, otherwise known as headhunters or search consultants, are hired by companies to find qualified candidates for them. Because of their relationship with these companies, they usually know about unadvertised jobs - the kind of jobs that might be perfect for you.

We at The Career News know how frustrating it can be to feel like the search for a stellar job is a dead-end one. We understand how it may sometimes look like there’s “no light at the end of the tunnel.” That’s why we recommend a tool called Resume Mailman.

The top notch recruiters on Resume Mailman’s network, have been screened and usually know of jobs that aren’t even advertised in traditional places like the Internet or newspaper classifieds. And those jobs are usually filled with job candidates the Recruiters have a relationship with or whose resumes are already in their files or database.
