Business Dress Etiquette

Dressing for success

Dressing for success plays an important role in all aspects of the business world, from the first interview to your first day on the job. Unfortunately, many people are unaware of just how important proper business dress etiquette really is. Virtually all employers enforce some type of dress code, and adhering to these policies can leave a favorable impression in the minds of your employers.

Job Interviews

One of the best ways to get an extra boost of confidence when walking into the initial job interview is by looking and dressing the part. If you feel good about your physical appearance, this will translate to increased self-confidence. When deciding on an appropriate outfit, you need to take into account the details of the job you are applying for and the company you will be working at. However, even if the job is casual, it’s a good idea to dress professionally for the interview. Avoid wearing excessive amounts of jewelry and cologne, and don’t neglect your hairstyle. Pay attention to details like dirty or uncut nails. If you can show the hiring manager that you have a keen eye for detail, you’ll make an excellent impression.

Make sure you leave any gum, cell phones, and coffee in your car before you enter the building. If you have any visible tattoos, try and cover them up to present a more professional image. The same goes for any visible piercings.

Once you have the job

Maintaining proper business dress etiquette is equally important once you have already landed a job. If your position requires a uniform, devote special attention to keeping it clean and in good condition. Just because you can’t choose what you wear doesn’t mean you can’t control how you look in it! A clean, pressed, and stain-free uniform will reflect well on the company, and more importantly, yourself. If your job follows some other type of dress code, such as business dress or business casual, it’s important to follow these guidelines at all times. If you aren’t paying attention to your appearance or if you’re demonstrating that you can’t follow simple guidelines like a dress code, this will obviously have a negative impact on your standing at the company. Don’t give your employers a reason to warn you or spend time disciplining you over something so trivial.

If your job requires that you travel, it’s important to follow the dress code even when you’re on the road. Remember, you’ll always be a representative of your company and your authority will travel with you wherever you go.

Basics of business casual dress

If your company enforces a business casual dress code, a simple pair of khaki pants with a pressed, long-sleeve button down dress shirt is more than enough for both men and women. Belts and shoes should be leather, both of the same color, and shoes should be cleaned and polished.

Basics of business dress

If you must follow standard business dress code, wear a dark suit with a long-sleeved dress shirt and necktie. Trousers typically match the color of the suit, but can occasionally be a contrasting color as long as it complements the rest of your ensemble.
