Military Veterans
Transitioning from military to civilian life can be an overwhelming experience. The founders of JobArsenal are military veterans who can relate to this stressful period, and know what it takes to make the shift as smooth as possible.
This section of JobArsenal is designed to provide transitioning service members and veterans with valuable career information regarding transitioning, military-friendly employers, and much more.
Prior to Transitioning
Prior to transitioning from the military, it's a good idea to take inventory of the useful skill sets that you have developed while in service. If there are any specific skills that you learned in the military that would like to continue working with in the civilian sector, you can focus exclusively on companies that offer you this opportunity.
Looking for a career based on your skills is a great way to make the transition as smooth as possible.
If you are separating from the military within the next six months, it's important to start searching for a job as soon as possible — leaving things until the last minute will only make things harder. By utilizing your local TAP center, you can gain access to useful resources and information that will help you find a new career. Other important resources include various military websites, VA centers, and local career service centers.
Career Search Persistence
It is important to be persistent while you begin your new civilian career search. It will take time, patience, and effort before you finally get where you want to be in your new career. Remember to network and look for individuals with military backgrounds that may be able to assist you.
Sometimes this means accepting a lower level position in order to get your foot in the door and gather the experience needed to help you further down the road at a better paying position. Remember, everyone has to start somewhere.
Veterans & Continuing Education
If you feel that you would like to pursue a career that is different than what you had done in the military, it is never too late to go back to school. Utilize all GI Bill and College Program benefits available to you in order to help achieve your educational goals.
Thousands of excellent higher education institutions around the country accept veteran benefits programs. You may choose to attend a college close to home or follow your educational dream to a university across the country. Whatever you choose, make sure you do adequate research before making a final decision. You may want to visit certain schools to get some more in-depth information from tours and other informative sources. Other items to consider include: tuition expenses, room & board expenses, financial aid, in-state vs. out-of-state, and degree programs.
The most important part of the job hunt is gathering research and information to help you make the best possible decision. The information you find here will give any military veteran the edge when it comes to staying on top of the job market. Be sure to take the time and study the Career Gear section for helpful tips and advice.
We wish you the very best of luck!
